Gynecomastia: What is it?

Posted on 31. Mar, 2009 by Dustin in Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes men to develop “Man Boobs”. The causes are not completely known, but are thought to be associated with a hormonal imbalance where men have lower amounts of Testosterone and elevated amounts of estrogen. Gynecomastia is mainly seen in younger males, usually in their early teens and normally go away with time.

There are Two Types of Gynecomastia:

* Real Gynecomastia
* Pseudogynecomastia

Real Gynecomastia

This is caused by a natural build up breast tissue in males. Every man has some amounts of breast tissue in the chest. Before puberty the levels of testosterone in the body are relatively low and more estrogen is produced. As puberty hits, testosterone levels in the body pick up and estrogen levels decrease, causing most of the breast tissue to decrease to a minimal level. However, for some men the breast tissue does not decrease causing man boobs past puberty, the reason why this happens is not really known.

This condition should be handled a professional, because there could be other more serious issues at play.

The most common approach to getting rid of real gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery which is very expensive and can be very embarrassing for most men. This really should be a last resort for most men, because only about 5% of the cases of “man boobs” are real gynecomastia and there are easier, less expensive, and less embarrassing cures for the second type of Gynecomastia.
